Content
The Thailand Ministry of Public Health - U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Collaboration (TUC) in collaboration with partners in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, conducted a clinical study resulting in a new algorithm for pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) detection. The newly proposed algorithm consists of three initial symptom screening criteria: (1) cough of any duration during the previous four weeks, (2) fever of any duration during the previous four weeks, and (3) abnormal night sweats for ≥ 20 days during the previous four weeks. For those with at least one symptom, sputum AFB microscopy and chest x-rays, mycobacterium culture, and CD4 counts are recommended, if indicated. Based on an analysis of patients enrolled in the study, this algorithm offers greater sensitivity and specificity compared with the Thai National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) recommended algorithm and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended algorithm; however, additional resources are required.
